●Brief description of project
For a shopping district that had been destroyed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, we planned a reconstruction project that would restore the retail area while further incorporating public housing for distaster victims. This project centers on the reconstruction of a coastal community. The proposed plan situates public housing and retail shops around a shared central courtyard. The roof is meant to evoke the coastal environment with its a large membrane structure symbolizing the bay area. The public housing design reflected efforts to support elderly residents and bolster a sense of community, and as such, it has come to serve as a pioneering model for subsequent public housing projects.
